Trump administration moves to cancel nearly $1 billion in HHS funding
CNBC reported that the proposed cuts include $567 million for HHS programs serving refugees, asylees and other non-citizens.

The White House announced plans late Friday to claw back funding approved by Congress, targeting HHS programs focused on immigrants and diversity. MedPage Today and STAT described the cuts as nearly $1 billion, while CNBC reported the total as $810 million.
CNBC reported that the proposal would block $567 million for HHS programs serving refugees, asylees and other non-citizens, as well as $28 million for HHS research. STAT reported that targeted projects include research on barriers to primary care among people of color and efforts to improve access to transgender care for youth of color in rural areas.
The White House used a pocket rescission, a maneuver that can leave Congress without the full 45-day review period before funds expire. The Government Accountability Office has said the maneuver is unlawful, according to CNBC and MedPage Today. Sen. Susan Collins criticized the action, saying it undermines Congress’s spending authority.
