Lilly’s investigational drug retatrutide led to weight loss and improved blood sugar control in adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes in a phase III trial, MedPage Today reported. Among 1,152 participants, average body weight loss at week 80 was 11.9% with 4 mg, 16.8% with 9 mg and 18.8% with 12 mg, compared with 5.1% with placebo. Mean HbA1c changes were -1.38%, -1.50% and -1.45% in the respective retatrutide groups, versus -0.45% with placebo.

Participants were taking stable background glucose-lowering therapy. Nausea, diarrhea and constipation were the most frequent adverse events. In the retatrutide groups, 3-11% of patients stopped treatment because of adverse events, compared with 5% of placebo recipients. Lilly said it plans to submit the data to the FDA for approval in early 2027. The trial had no active comparator arm.
