Pennsylvania measles outbreak passes 1,000 cases
Pennsylvania reported 1,004 measles cases, 198 hospitalizations and five deaths as of Monday.
Pennsylvania’s measles outbreak has passed 1,000 cases, making it the country’s largest state outbreak in more than three decades, according to NBC News and The Guardian. The state health department reported 1,004 cases Monday, with 198 hospitalizations and five deaths. The outbreak began in April, according to The Guardian.
About a third of cases have been in children, NBC News and The Hill reported. Lancaster County remained the hardest-hit area, with 391 cases, according to official figures cited by The Guardian.
The Guardian reported that Pennsylvania’s figures were not included in a CDC count amid a dispute over how to classify measles-related deaths. The CDC listed two measles deaths in the U.S. this year, according to The Guardian.
