Shionogi agrees to acquire rare-disease biotech IntraBio for $2 billion
The deal would give Shionogi Aqneursa, an FDA-approved treatment for Niemann-Pick disease type C and ataxia-telangiectasia.
Shionogi has agreed to acquire IntraBio for $2 billion, adding the biotech’s marketed rare-disease treatment Aqneursa to its portfolio. BioPharma Dive described IntraBio as Texas-based, while Endpoints News identified it as an Austin-based company.
The FDA approved Aqneursa in 2024 for neurological manifestations of Niemann-Pick disease type C, according to MedCity News. The FDA later expanded the drug’s label to include ataxia-telangiectasia, with BioPharma Dive reporting the clearance came in September. That made Aqneursa the first approved therapy for ataxia-telangiectasia, MedCity News reported.
Shionogi said the acquisition still needs regulatory reviews and that it expects the transaction to close by the end of this year.
