The Commonwealth Fund’s Biennial Health Insurance Survey found that the uninsured rate among working-age U.S. adults rose from 8.9 percent in 2024 to 11.2 percent in 2026. The survey attributed the increase to the expiration of Affordable Care Act marketplace premium tax credits and the rollback of pandemic-era protections that kept people enrolled in Medicaid.

Half of all uninsured people did not seek needed care because of cost concerns, according to the survey. The reports say access could worsen in 2027: STAT cited major Medicaid cuts and marketplace restrictions, while Fierce Healthcare reported that Medicaid work requirements expected to begin at the start of 2027 could drive further coverage losses.
