MPs on the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee have urged ministers to speed up and expand NHS access to Mounjaro in England. The committee described plans for 220,000 people to receive the drug on prescription by 2028 as “unambitious”. BBC News reported that this would cover around 6% of eligible people. The BMJ reported that the committee also called for bariatric surgery numbers to double and for an overhaul of obesity treatment.

The BBC said the NHS is working on a 12-year rollout, which is under review. It reported that giving all 2.8 million people eligible for the drug access immediately is estimated to cost the NHS £15.2 billion over five years. NHS England said it was looking at ways to accelerate the rollout while prioritising treatment for people with the most severe and complex needs.
