Democrats are making Medicaid reductions under Republicans’ One Big Beautiful Bill a campaign issue in battleground congressional districts, The Hill reported. In California’s Central Valley, Republican Rep. David Valadao is defending his vote as he seeks reelection in a swing district where roughly 6 in 10 constituents are enrolled in Medicaid, KFF Health News reported.

Valadao said during an Oct. 6 debate that there are “no actual cuts” to Medicaid and argued that the law’s work and community-engagement rules are reasonable. The law is expected to reduce Medicaid spending by more than $900 billion through 2034, according to KFF Health News. The Center for American Progress estimated that 60,000 more residents of Valadao’s district could be without coverage by 2034 because of the law and the expiration of enhanced premium tax credits for Affordable Care Act insurance plans. Democrats are attacking Republicans over their support for the law in ads and debates, The Hill reported.
