Coroner says Panettiere died from toxic effects of fentanyl and other drugs
People returning to opioid use after detox or a period without use may overdose on doses they previously tolerated, according to sources cited by ABC.
Actor Hayden Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol and quetiapine, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said. The death was ruled accidental. The coroner’s report said Panettiere had been in a drug rehabilitation center in Malibu, California, until two or three weeks earlier, ABC News reported.
ABC News cited experts who said people with drug addictions face a higher risk of fatal overdose after a period of sobriety because their tolerance may have dropped. It also cited MedlinePlus, which says most opioid overdose deaths occur in people who have just undergone detoxification. The report said medications including methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone can reduce the risk of resumed drug use and fatal overdose, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
