Physician groups are pushing back against HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s remarks that AI can outperform physicians in diagnosis and prescribing. At the Make America Healthy Again summit in Washington on Tuesday, Kennedy said AI could offer a second opinion “much better informed than any doctor in the country” and said doctors should check AI before diagnosing or prescribing.

The American Medical Association and five other physician groups said statements presenting AI as inherently better informed than doctors could diminish physician expertise and risk undermining patients’ trust. The groups said physicians use training, experience and professional judgment to account for patients’ individual circumstances. They said AI could offer new tools and insights, but patient safety, physician expertise and the humanity of clinical practice should guide its development and use.
