Researchers reported that an analysis of two phase 2 trials found lower visceral fat volume among people who received experimental injection CBL-514. Visceral fat is fat surrounding internal organs.

MRI data were available at the later follow-up for 23 people treated with CBL-514 and 17 who received placebo. Four weeks after the final injection, the CBL-514 group had an average 12.01% reduction in visceral fat from baseline, while the placebo group had an average 5.68% increase. Participants received lower-abdominal injections every three weeks for up to 12 weeks, with doses of up to 600 mg.

CBL-514 is designed to trigger apoptosis, or cell self-destruction, in fat cells. Recruitment for the first of two phase 3 trials was underway, according to ScienceDaily.
