Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after a stroke, his office said in a statement Sunday. Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game on Saturday, according to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors discovered he had experienced a stroke, then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.

Herwitt said Murphy was awake and alert and responding well to treatment. She said doctors were encouraged by his progress and that his team was optimistic he would make a full recovery. Murphy, 53, represents Connecticut in the Senate.
