The American College of Cardiology issued a scientific statement saying overall diet quality and a consistent pattern of healthy food choices matter for preventing and managing cardiovascular disease. Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the statement reviews nutrition evidence and recommendations for clinical care.

The statement recommends minimally processed plant-based foods and healthy fats and proteins, while limiting highly processed foods of poor nutritional quality, refined starches, added sugars and sodium. It also advises prioritizing water and other unsweetened drinks. The authors say access and affordability affect diet quality, and that GLP-1 medicines do not replace the need for a nutrient-rich diet.
