Pennsylvania health officials reported the state’s fifth measles-associated death of 2026 as the outbreak reached 943 confirmed cases across 39 counties. The person was an unvaccinated Lancaster County resident who tested positive for measles. Officials did not release further details, citing privacy protections, The Guardian reported. NBC News said officials did not report when the person died.
About 176 people have been hospitalized, according to The Guardian and NBC News. The Guardian reported that Pennsylvania had recorded 40 new positive cases as of Monday 28 September. Since the outbreak began in late April, state health centers have administered more than 5,500 measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations through 180 pop-up clinics, according to the state health department. More clinics are planned in the coming weeks and months.
