Medicaid changes put hundreds of thousands of legal immigrants at risk of losing coverage
More than 281,000 immigrants in nine states and the District of Columbia are expected to lose Medicaid in October.
Changes under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act are expected to end Medicaid coverage for many immigrants with legal status starting Oct. 1. Green card holders and some other groups are exempt, according to KFF Health News.
KFF Health News found that more than 281,000 immigrants in nine states and the District of Columbia are expected to lose Medicaid in October. Florida identified nearly 177,000, Arizona predicts nearly 28,000, and North Carolina expects about 29,000. The Congressional Budget Office estimated the eligibility changes will leave about 100,000 more immigrants uninsured by 2034.
Some states are using their own funds to maintain coverage. California expects about 148,000 immigrants to lose Medicaid, but is spending $365 million on a separate program to cover them until July 2027. New York and Pennsylvania also have state-funded coverage for many affected immigrants. Final state termination numbers are expected later this fall.
