The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers not to buy or use Demograss Premier, a product promoted for weight loss on websites including innovacionnatural.com and possibly sold in some retail stores. FDA laboratory analysis confirmed the product contains phenolphthalein, which is not listed on its label.

The FDA said phenolphthalein is not an active ingredient in any drug approved in the U.S. Studies suggest it may increase the risk of cancer. The agency asks health care professionals and consumers to report adverse events or side effects from the product through its MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program. The FDA also said it cannot test and identify all products marketed as dietary supplements that may contain potentially harmful hidden ingredients.
